EP Review: The Jensens ‘Everybody Talks’

The Jensens 2016

It’s been well documented how much we here at AAA Backstage love The Jensens. After dropping their latest single Elvis Is Dead last month we’ve been anxiously waiting to hear more from them and the day has finally come! We got an early listen to their new EP ‘Everybody Talks’ to further wet out appetites for their tour!

“Teeming with sonic diversity, it delves into everything from psychedelic grooves to laid back surf rock to post indie rock whilst still containing the garage pop sound we’ve all come to love.”

After establishing the band in 2013, the Brisbane 5-piece have made quite the name for themselves over the past 12 months. With a strudy repertoire of songs the gents are the purest example of hard work and persistence paying off.

Their latest work, EP ‘Everybody Talks’, is packed full of fresh garage pop/indie-rock bangers ready to please even the harshest of critics. From crowd favourites to new sounds, the EP shows greater musical exploration than previously heard from the Brissie boys. Teeming with sonic diversity, it delves into everything from psychedelic grooves to laid back surf rock to post indie rock whilst still containing the garage pop sound we’ve all come to love.

Opening with a massive shot of anthemic surf rock, Shark Thunder gives off an Arctic Monkeys meets Jaws vibe that’s simply mesmerising. The repetitive soaring riff gets stuck in your head more than Drake’s Hotline Bling, whilst the simple yet captivating verse is built towards a monster chorus that’s sure to have crowds losing their minds live.

Fears, Sick Sad World and single Elvis Is Dead are everything we’d expect from The Jensens. Feel good, upbeat, indie-pop tunes with memorable chorus’ and groovy verses that just make us want to dance. Previously unheard track Prom Night highlights a new direction sonically for the local lads. Exploring a psychedelic rock and somewhat romantic sound, the song provides depth to the EP and slots fittingly between the more garage-pop tracks. Short but sweet, Nobody Listens acts as a delightful interlude, encompassing atmospheric synthesizers to bring closure to its predecessor Prom Night

“Carving its own path in catchy indie pop, frontman Joe White’s vocals add a raw and edgy quality to the song that’s refreshingly honest and magnetising.”

Going Down and A New Hope bring a more aggressive rock sound to The Jensens catalogue. Sharing a similar opening riff to that of Fluorescent Adolescent by Arctic Monkeys, A New Hope shies away from being a carbon copy of the British rock royals massive hit. Carving its own path in catchy indie pop, frontman Joe White’s vocals add a raw and edgy quality to the song that’s refreshingly honest and magnetising.

Going Down boasts a guitar oriented journey of a song that explores everything from 60s rock to the psychedelic grooves of bands like Sticky Fingers. Driven by the continuous kick of drummer Phillip Fabros, Going Down is the essence of ‘Everybody Talks’. With a bit of everything, the song highlights The Jensens bravery to step outside their comfort zone and experiment with psychedelic and surf rock sounds that differ from the garage-pop vibes heard in their triple j spun singles.

The Jensens’ EP ‘Everybody Talks’ is set for release on Friday 11 March.
