Single Review – The Medics – ‘Griffin’

According to Wikipedia (the number one tried-and-trusted source of potentially-questionable facts since 2001) a griffin is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle; a creature of power and majesty. Powerful and majestic are words which, perhaps not so coincidentally, could also be used to describe the latest single from Brisbane-via-Cairns indie-rockers The Medics.
And what a single it is! The four-piece have created a sound that is at once dark, powerful, and full of intrigue, yet with a beautifully-measured vocal and soft, melodic guitar. If you haven’t heard it, it’s really worth watching the video clip for your first listen, as it follows the lyrics of “just a boy, just an adolescent child” being “fed to the monsters;” in this case being arrested for stealing a car, and his descent into violence behind prison walls. It is a bit of a heavy and sad story, played to music with integrity and craft.
With national radio support, a debut album coming out this year, and more shows in the pipeline, The Medics’ fanbase will only increase as more people hear this new single. These guys are definitely worth keeping a keen eye on.
