High Five Your Earholes With These Fresh Tracks

BROEN with No, My God

Broen

Sure, you should never judge a book by its cover. Apparently you should also never judge a song by its first minute and 38 seconds. You just never know when a sweet, distorted indie track can have an amazingly badass rap break down with the hook “Watching champagne bubbling down the drain”.

This is the case with Broen’s No, My God. The Norwegian outfit have put together a synthy, warped and all over amazing track for their upcoming debut EP ‘Yoga’. Remnant of the genre bending nature of artists like tUnE-yArDs, No, My God is an ode to youth like no other. Vocalist Marianne Røe describes the track as “about ignoring your problems, drinking, partying and instagramming your problems away.” Which sums up your twenties pretty succinctly to be honest.

The track is accompanied by a trippy as hell music video, which involves Røe filming herself singing in various bathrooms in Seville and Oslo. Apparently a lot of queuing was required to get these shots, so props to her. Their EP is set for release on May 6 and considering their band involves a tuba player, it’s sure to be a cracker.

HALCYON DRIVE with Books For The Holidays

Halcyon Drive

If Phil Collins made semi-upbeat indie pop, it would sound a little something like Halcyon Drive. Starting out soft and sweet, this song really kicks in at around the first minute with some marching band percussion. From twee Angus Stone sentimentality, to driving upbeat tempo, Books For The Holidays hits the mark.

With lyrics that sound like they came straight out of a John Green novel, “You have a smile like a hurricane, it blows right in and steals my breathe away”, this is most definitely a love song for the romantic at heart. It’s like a warm hug or a cup of hot choccy and is undeniable proof that Halcyon Drive are sweethearts.

THE BOXER REBELLION with Weapon

TheBoxerRebellion

These London rockers have been kicking since 2001. When a band has been around a while it can be hard to keep it fresh. Fortunately, The Boxer Rebellion has done this with Weapon. It’s the latest single from their fifth album ‘Ocean by Ocean’ and it sees the band take an exploration into more 80s inspired sounds.

Oddly enough, the higher vocals actually kind of sound like Christina McVie. It’s a more lush, expansive track than their norm. With far more synths and heavy new wave pop influence, it seems to have some fans divided, however it’s a definite step into a really cool direction.

POP CULT with Feels Right

popcult

If Indie-pop Brian Jonestown Massacre sounds like your jam, then you should definitely sink your teeth into Pop-Cult. Or at least try their kool-aid. This Queensland act bring psychedelia sounds that could come straight outta Portland. In short, Feels Right is a hellava good time.

With a music video that should not be watched by any nun, Feels Right depicts an alcoholic priest preaching to his trippy followers in a dusty church. It’s a top notch video and a top notch song. So much so, that Pop Cult have just won the triple j unearthed competition to play at Big Pineapple in May. They’ll be joining the likes of Rüfüs, You Am I, and The Smith Street Band. Check out the full line-up HERE.

COOL SOUNDS with Shake

coolsound

Is your life lacking in alto sax? Then fear no more because the groovy cats of Cool Sounds have the goods. This Melbournian six piece are so chill to listen to that you may turn into an icicle. Kind of like a jazzed up Beach Fossils, Shake is an easy going tune of dreamy proportions. It’s the latest single from their debut album ‘Dance Moves’ which will be released later this year.

The real highlight of track is its music video. It’s so retro and so amazing. This video alone features Space Jam on VHS, a man playing a saxophone whilst wearing a Back To The Future style jacket, iMac filters and a television wearing a fedora. Brilliant.
