Interview: The Orwells

The Orwells are about to head off on their first ever Australian tour with a variety of headlining dates as well as being a part of some awesome festival lineups such as Sweaty Palms and Yours & Owls Festival. We caught up with Mario from the band to have a quick chat about the upcoming tour and latest release of their album, new music and Terrible Human Beings.

Quickly, to open up, for any readers out there who may not know who The Orwells are, how would you introduce your band and your sound etc?”

I don’t know if we’re really anything special, just a rock band in their early 20s really I don’t know what else to say about us *laughs*

So you guys are just about to head off on your first ever Australian Tour, are there any shows in particular that you guys are especially excited for?

Probably the one on my birthday! I feel like that’s going to be remembered the best for me, that’s the one in Melbourne, so hopefully it’s a good birthday!

You guys have definitely outdone yourself with the release of ‘Terrible Human Beings’. What’s the response been like from fans compared to previous releases from you guys?

I think mainly from fans it’s been more positive, and for us we’re definitely even more proud of this than anything else we’ve ever made so I think if we liked it and the fans like it then that’s all that matters to us.

There was a period I read that you guys recorded in February 2016 and sat on the album for a year, I know a lot of creatives struggle with this but for you guys looking back is there anything that you think you’d change about anything on the album?

Yeah I think that was the second time we tried to do it, we had recorded it once before and it just wasn’t really up to our standard so we went back into the studio with a different producer and it turned out a lot better, so when we finally finished it in February we were completely happy with it and excited to put it out and sometimes sadly putting something out there that you love takes longer than it should to do it right.

You guys are hitting up Sweaty Palms Fest as well as Yours & Owls Festival on the backend of this tour. Are there any artists you guys are excited to see play?

I actually haven’t had the chance to have a look at the bills so I don’t really know who’s playing *laughs*

What’s the plan moving forward for The Orwells? Are you guys writing or looking to head into the studio any time soon or should fans expect quite a wait?

Nah! You’ll probably get a couple of songs soon! Maybe even a quick little EP to kind of dust off the cobwebs but we’re probably not going to be getting stuck in to writing every day until November when we get home from the Pixies run.

I heard that you guys were playing with Weezer soon and I know that they’ve been a huge influence on you guys musically. What are you expecting from that are you excited?

Definitely! It’s gonna be nice to see how one of our favourite bands operate and hopefully we can spend some time with them and get to know them because they mean a lot to me and to a lot of us. Its really one of those dream bills where you get an email one day and are like, “holy shit,” and you’re super happy.
