Pop Queen Maiah Manser Drops Dracula-Inspired Tune & It’s Bloody Brilliant

After releasing the incredible 15-minute experimental slow burner 3REMAIN back in February, it’s been quite the wait to hear back from Seattle based noir-pop queen Maiah Manser. Now Manser has finally returned with yet another silky smooth anthem, Second Skin.

Opening with a range of booming drums and acapella sampling which form as the underlying basis of the track, the track gradually builds into a hair-raising soundscape guided by producer Buddy Ross, collaborator to the RnB prince Frank Ocean. Instrumentally alone, it’s a poppy and experimental ride which is utterly beautiful!

At the end of the day it’s Maiah’s vocals which really make the tune. As soon as they slide in, backed by Ross’ range of serene piano chords and strings, there’s an undeniable likeness to Lana Del Rey. Intoxicatingly uplifting yet melancholic, it’s this range that makes Second Skin so compelling.

Inspired by the novel Dracula, Manser explains she “explored the meaning of what it is to have a second skin in this yearning love song – Whether this defines emotional armour or making one stronger, a second skin is a part of every human process.”

With tracks like these it’s really no wonder she’s gone onto support huge acts like Ariana Grande, Pharrell Williams, and even our homegrown neo-jazz heroes Hiatus Kaiyote. We can’t wait to hear what she has next up her sleeves, as there’s no doubt she’s one of the most promising pop acts of late!
