PREMIERE: Munro Melano California Dreamin’ In Latest Music Video

In a year which Donald Trump was officially elected to become the next leader of the Western World, and possibly the last, you’d think it would be pretty hard to find a musician still writing music about moving to the United States. But sometimes art doesn’t have to be logical, and Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Munro Melano’s latest music video toys with the idea America may just be the escape you need from your mundane routine.

Move To California is the first slice lifted from Melano’s long-awaited debut album, set for release sometime next year. The melancholic alt-pop tune, driven by a droning synthesiser hook, blunted drumming, and busy bass lines, touches on the all-too-common cliché that the grass is greener on the other side, “Take a look down/We’re living on the outer… oh, my darling let’s just move to California/Everybody’s got a heart that’s up for offer”.

The retro synth tones and Melano’s gloomy, but somehow catchy, vocals are emphasised by the visuals of the music video, directed by John Tummino and shot in Melano’s home in Reservoir, Melbourne.

The video sees a young women increasingly becoming sick of her daily life. Like all of us she struggles out of bed, and then follows her morning routine with a slight look of distain. A quick walk along an overcast beach seems to provide her with the epiphany she’d be much happier living in the sun-drenched hills of California, but her house’s suburban view seems to wrestle her back to reality.

Melano’s upcoming debut album follows two EPs, ‘Running Round’ and the recent ‘Blue Veins’, and ARIA-nominated work on the Golden Guitar winning album ‘Powerlines’ by Mustered Courage.

The pianist and songwriter wrote the latest single during a Melbourne winter, inspired by grey skies and the farewell of a number of friends who were taking a leap of faith by moving to Los Angeles. Melano says Move To California is about those impossible expectations for a place that only really exists in your imagination.

Even though the song and music video are initially a tad depressing, Melano’s melody and synthesiser layers will float around your head for hours. If you, like us, can’t wait for the debut album to drop, stick the music video below on repeat!
