Slip, Slop & Slap on Sun Sap’s ‘Miss Behind’

Sun Sap wear their sunnies inside because their future is so bright. That, or their music is so incredibly sun-dappled that it’ll put a warming smile on your face—no matter your mood or your location. Their latest, Miss Behind, is punch of surf-rock and indie-pop that is perfect precursor to the warmer months here in Australia.

Believe it or not, Miss Behind is only the five-piece’s third single—following breakout tune, Mexico and Hanging Hearts—yet the band shows true maturity and progression in their musicality. As Miss Behind plods along to its charming pace, there’s a resonance of subtle horns in the background. Though quite deep in the mix, they make a stunning impact on Sun Sap’s glossy, honky-tonk lineage. This, combined that brilliant harmonica power play, makes Miss Behind a tune that’s beginning the be looped.

According to the band, the tune was, “delivered to us in a lucid dream by Burt Bacharach to share with the world.” I can absolutely see where their smooth and laid-back nature is drawn from, then. And although Sun Sap’s influences may sprawl across their contemporaries such as the Growlers, the Doors and, to a more niche extent, the Family Jordan, this group of NSW’ers know how to take what they’ve grown up on and concoct a new, languid piece of sunny nostalgia.

If your aching for some sunny tunes to brighten up your day, Sun Sap will be playing a shows in Wollongong and Sydney between September and November including a stop at Wollongong’s premiere two-day music festival, Yours & Owls.
