Violent Soho Play It Safe, Still Rock Though For Like A Version

Brisbane’s newest additions to Fortitude Valley’s ‘Walk Of Fame’ Violent Soho have taken on, and of course absolutely nailed, American rock heroes Silversun Pickups’ banger Lazy Eye. Guitarist James Tidswell introduced the cover with, “We’re not the best at (dropping in songs within songs), but we thought we’d try to mix it up as well. So see if you can spot the sneaky other song!”.

After a short and cheeky Smells Like Teen Spirit beginning, the Mansfield rockers settled into the simple chugging groove of the original. Tuned a couple of semitones down from the Silversun Pickups’ banger, Voho’s cover is darker, heavier, and overall delightfully oozes with the hard-hitting gritty rock we’ve come to love from the quartet.

However, much like frontman Brian Aubert in most Silversun Pickups tunes, the spotlight for most of the cover is on Luke Boerdam as he lazily croons the verses and shreds some chunky melodies and lead guitar breaks. The cover in fact is similar to Violent Soho’s OK Cathedral live structurally, so it’s a bit of a shame the Brisbane lads didn’t figure out how make the cover more of a full-band affair.

Towards the end of the soaring reverb-chamber-of-bliss breakdown Violent Soho visually really start getting into the track, though it’s a little too late in a cover that sticks very true to the original. It’s a solid cover, but we always love a band or artist who’s willing to cover something challenging and out of their comfort zone. Take Methyl Ethel’s cover of Justin Timberlake for example…
