Born Joy Dead (Bread?) Bake Up Fresh Single “Sourdough”
From the ashes of Hungry Kids of Hungary comes… freshly baked Sourdough! Brisbane outfit Born Joy Dead have returned with their second single since debut EP ‘Stones in My Shoe,’ Sourdough.
Sourdough is notable for debuting a different writing style for the 4-piece. Gone are the dirty riffs and heaving percussion, which, although good value live, didn’t especially differentiate Born Joy Dead from other acts in the Brisbane scene.
Instead, a listener is greeted with a shuffling, slippery drum beat much further back in the arrangement, the perfect backdrop for Ben Dalton’s droning voice lamenting the daily grind. This is a song that, in spirit more than in sound, belongs firmly at the front of Australia’s burgeoning dole-wave scene.
The major sonic shift from ‘Stones in My Shoe’ is the guitars, which are now more complementary, rather than the focus. In particular, we’re reminded of The Holidays’ guitar-work on their last album ‘Real Feel,’ which is much more atmospheric and stop-start.
Born Joy Dead will be playing a triumphant home gig at Black Bear Lodge in early September to launch Sourdough, the first single from their untitled second EP. Details and tickets below!
