PREMIERE: Meridian Theory Bring The Rage In “Piss and Complain”
Coffs Harbour metalcore quintet Meridian Theory are back, and they’ve brought the third and final track off their debut EP with them! Piss and Complain is the latest offering from their debut EP ‘You Call THAT An EP?’, and they sure as hell know how to close out a release cycle!
Piss and Complain bursts out of the gates from the get go with a tasty little intro before leaping into a galloping riff, dragging the listener along for a wild ride from the start. The addition of some spicy lead lines throughout this section adds some nice variation, keeping things interesting while showcasing the guitarist’s technical ability.
Just before the chorus hits, the band change it up, and throw some groove-laden riffs in, reminiscent of Lamb of God. Rather than sounding out of the place, this riffing keeps Piss and Complain interesting without slowing it down or drastically changing styles. Then the chorus erupts.
Meridian Theory have bucked the current trend of having super poppy choruses with clean vocals (looking at you Amity), and have opted to keep things heavy. With a huge chorus that wouldn’t be out of place in a Parkway Drive song, the growled vocals ripple with menace, especially when delivering the lines “All you do is/Piss and complain”.
With a solo-dense bridge keeping the ball rolling, Meridian Theory slam through another verse and chorus, without losing any speed or ferocity. While some may see the Verse/Chorus/Bridge/Verse/Chorus song structure as old, however Meridian Theory manage to keep it fresh and interesting with their liberal use of catchy yet technical lead lines, and their propensity to do so shows throughout the track! As the track comes to a close, Meridian Theory ramp up the heavy, with a crushing breakdown that brings the track, and subsequently the EP, to a resounding and brutal close.
Lyrically, Piss and Complain is a direct stab at those people who constantly whinge and belittle; the lyrics don’t attempt to disguise their hostility. “We all know at least one,” says the band, “…that person who constantly finds a problem…We’ve had enough! Life is meant to be fun, shut your mouth and start living!”
This third and final offering from the North Coast crew is the perfect way to end their debut EP ‘You Call THAT An EP?’, and is another offering of modern metal core that, while clearly showing its roots, is not afraid to spice things up and show off a bit. Fresh from their support of Polaris, Eat Your Heart Out, and Far Away Stables, Meridian Theory are not showing any sign of slowing down, and are aiming to tour through the end of this year and into next year, so keep your eyes peeled!
