Q & A: Waxhead
Byron Bay quartet Waxhead are “fluent in foreign tongues” thanks to scores of overseas shows and rockin’ out at big-named festivals. However, their new single Mad Gibberish sees the gents return to their breezy surfing roots with a garage rock tune based on people watching. We asked the band some pretty deep questions to get to know them and their music just a little bit better.
If you could live in any time period, what would it be?
The 60s and 70s looked pretty mad there’s a lot of mental bands and music festivals I would love to check out. Right now is pretty sweet too…
What are your favourite lyrics of all time?
Patty Smith’s Free Money or I am the Walrus because I empathise with the egg man…
If you could get around in any type of transportation for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A UFO.
What tattoo would you get?
My dog Huckelberry or my cat Otto, because they’re lords!
Neverland, Narnia, or Atlantis?
Atlantis, because it has much better surf…
What’s your proudest achievement?
I had a trophy for swimming when I was like five or six but that’s been missing for decades. Come to think of it that may have been the greatest achievement of my life…it’s either that second place finishing in the butterfly stroke or playing music with my band overseas.
What’s one album people would be surprised to hear you own?
Nigeria 70’s Original Afro Funk Classics. It’s only a surprise if you haven’t heard it before, because if you had you would know its one hot ball of funk!
For the uninitiated, how do you describe Waxhead’s sound and live show?
Frenzied satirical surf punk.
We’re loving your new single Mad Gibberish, what’s the story behind the song?
Just watching people talking mad frantic gibberish! One day I was just watching people’s mouths open and shut and they looked like a jellyfish sifting through water…
Lastly, what are three things people should know about Waxhead?
We like playing music, writing songs, and surfing!
