A.B. Original and Paul Kelly Take On “Dumb Things” For Like A Version
To spotlight the release of their upcoming album ‘Reclaim Australia’, A.B. Original took to triple j’s Like A Version, accompanied by the one and only rock legend Paul Kelly! Together the trio shed a new light on Kelly’s 80s smash Dumb Things.
Paul Kelly “welcome[s] strangers to the show”, with a brand new hip-hop twist. The slack beat of the cover opens new sonic gulleys for Briggs and Trials to insert their hand-spun, hard-hitting lyrics discussing the complacent Aussie attitudes towards issues facing the Indigenous community. Lines like “Thinking we’re getting that welfare? Thinking we’re getting that healthcare?” roll off the tongue, highlighting the confronting sentiment of their upcoming album and their tremendous capacity to wield rhythm and rhyme.
The duo also performed the album’s lead single January 26 to address the Australia Day versus Invasion Day name debate. Whilst triple j have discussed potentially shifting the date for the Hottest 100, they have confirmed that the event will go ahead on Thursday the 26th of January.
The legendary presence of Paul Kelly and fervent relevance of the lyrics mark this version has a must watch. Check it out below!
