Adjust Your TV Set With Duchess Says’ “I Repeat Myself” Video
Montreal Moog Rock outfit Duchess Says have just released a distinctly individual music video for I Repeat Myself ahead of the upcoming release of their third album ‘Sciences Nouvelles’ this week.
Opening with VHS static and the message of “The Church of Budgerigars presents: I Repeat Myself” it’s clear this isn’t your run-of-the-mill video. What follows is an orgy of nostalgic visuals mixed with wild video overlays, all soundtracked by music that you swear isn’t from 2016.
Each member of Duchess Says has their own set-piece for the video and all are incredibly unique. Drummer Simon Besres is almost in a Bob Ross scenario sandwiched between the remnants of a drum kit and a huge sheet of steel as he bangs away on each with gusto.
Meanwhile, guitarist Philippe Clement lives inside what can only be described as an igloo of guitar amps. Only the chest and above is seen of keyboardist Ismael Tremblay, as otherwise he is surrounded and engulfed by a fascinating collection of synthesisers. All the while, singer Annie-Claude Deschenes is a mysterious presence between being an other-worldly visually effected head, and a frustrated nuclear plant worker.
Channeling the same synth individuality of 80’s pioneers Devo, Duchess Says also add a terrific punk element to the distinctively 80’s sound. I Repeat Myself starts with a drum-beat reminiscent of classic dance-floor banger Take On Me before opening up to the high-energy synth jam that grabs us and doesn’t let go until the very end.
Guitar and bass hold down a no non-sense rhythm with terrific crunchy production on the guitars. Synth tones that have graced various hits from the golden age of pop (the 80’s) ring across the track, while the vocals go between a fun dance vibe (almost like Kids in America) and a wild punk roar, changing between both like the singer of Future Islands.
Duchess Says’ third album ‘Sciences Nouvelles’ releases on Friday, October 14.
