BENEE Drops New Single ‘Sad Boiii’ Ahead of Big Tour with Olivia Rodrigo
New Zealand alt-pop sensation BENEE is back with her new single, Sad Boiii, kicking off an exciting new chapter in her music career. The track marks her first release of 2024, blending sun-soaked, island-inspired beats with laid-back guitar chords that give a nod to her Kiwi roots.
Despite the track’s breezy sound, BENEE’s lyrics pack an emotional punch. Sad Boiii explores the frustrations of being with someone who hides behind a tough-guy façade, only to reveal their vulnerability and refusal to seek help.
“I tried to write a summery and happy tune with a dark meaning. I’d go to local festivals as a kid, and I wanted to capture the vibe of the outdoor setting. A lot of New Zealand music has a reggae energy, which is very nostalgic for me. Lyrically, ‘Sad Boiii’ is about being in a relationship where you’re pissed off with the other person because he has a façade going on. Even though he pretends to be tough, he’s just another damaged boy who needs help. Maybe you came from that in a past relationship and thought this guy was more stable, but he ends up being a depressed dude too. I fall for so many of those men, and it’s draining. They don’t want to get therapy; they just want to stay with you. Don’t be fooled by the bad boy image!” – BENEE.

The track is accompanied by a quirky music video directed by Nikki Milan Houston, which stars BENEE alongside a special guest, Cotton the lamb.
Currently touring North America with Wallows, BENEE is also set to join Olivia Rodrigo on her GUTS Tour in Australia this October. After a stellar 2023—featuring her hit single Green Honda and collaborations with Mallrat and Phoenix—Sad Boiii marks another evolution in her ever-growing career.
With more music on the way, BENEE’s momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
