Cardboard Cutouts Unveil Debut Album ‘Politics and Footy Tips’ and Launch National Tour

Queensland alt-indie favourites Cardboard Cutouts have officially dropped their debut album, Politics and Footy Tips, a bold and emotionally layered project showcasing the band’s signature blend of punchy riffs and reflective storytelling.

Featuring previously released singles like the explosive anthem ‘My Best Friend’, soaring ballad ‘Steer’, and genre-defying jam ‘Ask Around’, the album spans nine tracks that trace a journey through anxiety, identity, and self-acceptance. Built across five years, the record draws from the band’s lived experiences, kicking off with the raw and personal ‘Dishy’, which reflects frontman Eliot Argus’ time in hospitality and the slow embrace of self-worth.

“Every single song on the album has a rich story behind it, and we aimed to highlight this by giving each song its own distinct sound and style. By the end of the album there has been a shift  to accept self and circumstance, despite everything life throws at you. There are still notes of anxiety, but there is no hopelessness. There is a plan, and an emergence has begun. We will take our time, and we will keep pushing forward.” Cardboard Cutouts.

Cardboard Cutouts bring a uniquely Queensland DIY energy to their music, fusing gritty guitar work with emotionally charged lyrics and tight production. Every track on Politics and Footy Tips feels distinct, yet collectively it forms a cohesive narrative arc that evolves from self-doubt to quiet resilience.

To celebrate the release, the band are hitting the road with a headline national tour, starting tonight at Brisbane’s The Brightside before heading through NSW, ACT, TAS and more.

With this release, Cardboard Cutouts cement themselves as one of Australia’s most exciting new voices in alt-rock — unpolished, heartfelt, and urgently real.
