Case, Lang & Veirs Unite For ‘Atomic Number’

case/lang/veirs

Musical supergroups are a tricky beast – they either generate a mush of pretentious, egotistical self-indulgence, or unite the best elements of each individual to form something incredible. Judging by their lush track Atomic Number, the grouping of case/lang/veirs is one of the latter.

Starting with heavily-reverbed acoustic guitar, the song builds to include subtle percussion and soft strings. The verses see the vocalists trade lines in a call-and-response style, and they come together in heavenly unison during the chorus, never overwhelming each other.

The song is a lyrical riddle, featuring lines like “Latin words across my heart, symbols of infinity”. Thankfully, the music video accompanying the song makes the meaning clearer, with the added bonus of an animated character crossing a colourful land.

With their incredible voices, Neko Case, Laura Veirs, and k.d. lang have each made a name for themselves in the country music world. While Veirs has released a number of albums to critical acclaim, Neko Case has been busy building a fan-base with her discography of solo alt-country albums and Grammy Award winner k.d. lang has garnered mainstream success with hits like Constant Craving.
