Cedarsmoke Enter Bold New Era with Psychedelic Single ‘Kicking Drugs’

Brisbane indie rock outfit Cedarsmoke have returned with a genre-blurring new single, ‘Kicking Drugs’, a sonic leap into a vibrant, experimental era for the long-standing local favourites.

Blending elements of alt-rock, folk, electronica and psychedelia, ‘Kicking Drugs’ captures the feeling of renewal — a fresh start after shaking off old habits. Built on bright acoustic strums, hazy synth textures and swirling keys, the track delivers a hopeful, nostalgic mood while signalling the band’s shift into more collaborative, adventurous territory.

“Influenced by Jungian Colour Psychology, Kicking Drugs is orange – the colour symbolising vitality, stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new experiences.”

Fronted by songwriter Jon Cloumassis and now joined by Tamala Wright (drums/vocals) and Matt Cloumassis (lead guitar), Cedarsmoke is embracing a new dynamic. With roots dating back to 2016, the band has been a staple of Brisbane’s indie scene, receiving support from some of the country’s biggest tastemakers in that time.

Lyrically and sonically, ‘Kicking Drugs’ explores freedom, friendship and the thrill of embracing new experiences. Inspired by Jungian colour theory — specifically the colour orange, which represents vitality and change — the song serves as a glowing introduction to the band’s upcoming third full-length album.

Cedarsmoke’s latest single is both a bold departure and a welcome evolution.
