Gold Coast Celebrating Their Most Golden Musicians

GCMA

With the Gold Coast Music Awards coming up in a few weeks, the city is preparing to celebrate its most golden musicians, bands, venues, and events. After sorting through over 145 nominations, music industry judging panels have finally selected the finalists.

Cinematic folk songstress Ella Fence took out four final spots, while QMAs Pop Winner Amy Shark, folk duo Hussy Hicks, and 4-piece Leopold’s Treat each took out two finalist places.

A hand-drawn animation clip from grunge-rock trio Baltimore Gun Club was a finalist for Best Music Video, while the finalist spot for Emerging Artist of the Year went to 18-year-old opera singer Jenna Dearness-Dark, known for her time on The Voice Season Two.

Organiser Samantha Morris said she was glad to see such a diverse range of genres amongst the finalists and an all-female competition for Song of the Year.

“There is a hive of activity on the Gold Coast music scene and we want to shine a spotlight on the people and places that make this incredible city’s music,” she said.

As if a finalist nomination wasn’t exciting enough, the chance to perform at BIGSOUND 2016 and Bluesfest Byron busker’s stage are amongst the major prizes up for grabs for the winners, as well as paid gigs at Gold Coast music events and venues.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has extended his congratulations to the finalists and affirmed his support for the city’s music industry.

“Music, as a form of expression and enjoyment, is one area where [the Gold Coast] have some incredible artists,” Councillor Tate said.

“The awards are a broader celebration of everything we have to offer right here on the Gold Coast. Our Culture Strategy 2023 supports all forms of the arts including music and I look forward to the growth of this industry,” he said.

Voting for the People’s Choice Award opens on Friday 27 May, and Burleigh Brewing Co. will host the awards presentation on Thursday 16 June. Tickets come with a stack of awesome perks including entry to the after-party at Hard Rock Café – get on it!
