Crafternoon Explorations Q&A: THE ART

The Art

Sydney rockers THE ART have been living the teenage rock dream over the past few years, supporting huge acts such as The Pixies, Sonic Youth, and Steel Panther just to name a few! We asked the band how they’d spend an afternoon full of artistic exploration and the inspiration behind their new single Minute To Madness.

Which band member would be most likely to spend a weekend at the art gallery?

Any of us really! I think Jordan would lose patience at a whole weekend, but any of us could definitely be swayed by the notion.

What’s your go-to art appreciation beverage?

Red wine…it’s a drink that you’re meant to dissect and analyse, it seems only fitting to consume it and art together.

If you were asked to create an art piece for an exhibit, which member of the band would you choose to do it and what would it be?

Probably Azaria. Apart from music, painting has always been high on his agenda. I remember when we were younger and the band shared a house together, the walls throughout were covered in plastic which Azaria would paint all over. It was like living inside an ever evolving painting!

If you had to have a giant artistic centrepiece in your house, what would it be?

A HUGE painting of the moon, taking up a whole wall. I once stayed in an apartment in New York with one and I’ve been jealous ever since!

Which member of the band would you trust to paint the house?

Strangely enough, Azaria. Despite appearances he is actually quite handy, and owns a lot of tools. He’s actually my go-to handyman when things need fixing at my house. It’s weird…

Which member of the band would be most likely to ruin the painting by doodling with a permanent marker?

Definitely Jordan, he loves to doodle with permanent marker on most things…mostly dressing room walls with slightly satanic, stick figure, caveman masterpieces.

If you had to design your own outfits for a tour, what would they look like?

That’s a tough question, we would need four very different outfits. Azaria would want some sort of mirrorball jumpsuit, Jordan would refuse to wear anything other than shorts…we’d probably all compromise on leather jackets, but the rest would be a nightmare.

How would you describe THE ART’s sound?

Noisy, Melodic, and alt-rock.

We’re loving your latest single Minute To Madness, what was the inspiration behind the song?

I was reading a book called ‘Heart Shaped Box’ by Joe Hill, it was about being propelled forward by the fear of being pursued by something you cannot see. Minute To Madness is about the moment of calm before delving into chaos.

Lastly, tell us three things people should know about your live show?

  1. It will probably be really loud.
  2. Azaria is not a chick.
  3. It really will be quite loud.
