Deep Sea Arcade Share Psychedelic DIY Video for ‘No Direction’

Beloved indie psych-pop outfit Deep Sea Arcade are back with a visual stunner for their recent single ‘No Direction’—and we’re stoked to offer fans the very first look, exclusively on AAA Backstage.

Filmed entirely at frontman Nic Mckenzie’s home, the video leans into retro sci-fi and surreal aesthetics, transforming a humble DIY set into a dreamy, interstellar music studio. Created with help from his cousin Andrew Mortlock and held together with velcro (yes, really), the space station-inspired set pays tribute to classic space imagery and cult cinema. Think Alien meets vintage NASA, complete with psychedelic visuals, moody lighting, and yes—a giant squid cameo.

“The whole set was held together with velcro we bought from Bunnings—not a single screw in sight, I think we may have broken a few OH&S rules, but it was just the two of us making it… and we’ve come through unscathed” – Nic Mckenzie.

Mckenzie, who has a background in animation, returned to After Effects after a five-year break to craft the clip’s cosmic, hand-animated flourishes. The result is a kaleidoscopic, otherworldly complement to the song’s shimmering textures.

Co-produced and mixed by Jay Watson (Tame Impala, Pond), ‘No Direction’ is the first taste of Deep Sea Arcade’s upcoming third album, expected mid-year. Reflecting on themes of transition and transformation, the track captures the moment between who we were and who we’re becoming.

Watch the premiere of ‘No Direction’ right now, only on AAA Backstage.
