Twisted Deserted Island Q & A: Kyle Lockyer from ‘Stillwater Giants’

Stillwater Giants

Loveable Perth rockers Stillwater Giants are gearing up to make 2016 their year with latest single Montage a taster of their long overdue debut album ‘Munich’, set to drop in a few months time. We placed the quartet’s bassist Kyle Lockyer (metaphorically) on a deserted island to test his survival skills and to confirm what exactly is the band’s sound.

If you had to be stuck on an island with three people for the rest of your life, who would you choose?

Anyone but the band guys. Nah, probs Hodor, The Mountain (deceased), and Kermit The Frog. Yeah, we are never getting off this island…

If you had to choose one album to listen to whilst on the island, what would it be?

‘Anthology’ by John Farnham. But Hodor has to sing it out. In fact, they can all sing it out. I don’t think I want to get off this island anymore. Man, Johnny is great but Stillwater Giants are better.

All of a sudden, you realise the islandis actually the Hunger Games, whats your survival strategy?

Give them all a whip-crack with my whoopy tail. Also, I wouldn’t be a carrier, nor very powerful. Strategy depends so much on the individual’s strengths and weaknesses. As an all-around mediocre physical being, this is the strategy I’d take.

Which band member would be the District 1 badass and who would be completely out of their depth?

Tom’s a self-made man, he’d definitely be the badass. But he’s also very brittle physically, so dunno if his bravado would come across to match his self-made-manliness. Henry would be out of his depth, just from the fact he’s a self-made idiot. But he’s very strong physically, tough as nails. Strongest guy I know, but stupid.

What would be your weapon of choice?

Henry, because he’s so very strong, but stupid.

Like the Katniss and Peter story, which band member would forget the purpose of the Games and look for love instead?

Probably myself. I’m not a fighter, more of a lover (and a real good one at that). It would be hard to find love in a situation like this, but I’ve just found out that Hodor’s real name is Willis. That’s pretty hot!

How would you attract sponsorship from The Capital/become a fan favourite?

Shred the bass like I normally do. Maybe give them the old G – D – Am, maybe slip in an Em for good measure if I’m feeling confident. Not likely.

For the uninitiated, how do you describe the Stillwater Giants sound?

We normally say surf-rock, just through the fact that half of us surf. Plus it’s way easier to say that then surf/rock/pop/indie/funk/blues/meta-jazz. But I would say 6/7 of those last ones would suit our sound. More rock/pop than anything, with a bit of surf. There are way too many genres nowadays…

Were loving your latest single Montage, whats the inspiration or story behind the song?

Thankyou! It’s kind of a daydreaming of a girl/ex scenario which highlights the mind’s need for reflection and euphoric sense of escape through love and happiness. There’s no direct inspiration that I can think of, however I’m sure this happens frequently enough for our band to produce this song.

Lastly, what are three things people should know about your upcoming debut album Munich?

It’s taken a long time to produce so you better like it. The word ‘Munich’ is derived of a time when the band wasn’t functioning, and it’s rejuvenation through these hard times. And it was recorded live, so we hope you enjoy its flaws as much as you enjoy its absolute greatness.
