Dots + Loops Stringing Classical Music & Club Atmosphere
In need of your classical music fix but finding it hard to persuade your ‘cool’ friends to tag along? Well Dots+Loops are here to satisfy your cravings AND impress your less cultured acquaintances!
Dots+Loops is a Brisbane-based concert series exploring the space between a traditional classical concerts and a club gig. With a focus on social community, inclusivity, and great new music, the series has already seen six highly successful shows since 2014.
The series has so far presented Australian and world premieres of music by Nico Muhly, Caroline Shaw, The National’s Bryce Dessner, and Chris Perren, and collaborated with musicians from the Sydney Symphony, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, London’s Royal Academy of Music, and the Australian National Academy of Music.
Dots+Loops Recomposed is the series’ seventh and biggest show yet, set in GOMA’s stunning (and very comfortable River Room. The night will open with the premiere of a new major work from Brisbane indie-chamber septet Nonsemble. Hot off the heels of their art-pop EP ‘Spaceship Earth’, this new work will see them revisiting their contemporary classical and post-rock roots.
Penned by the group’s lead composer Chris Perren (Mr Maps, Software of Seagulls), the 20-minute work is their first since 2014’s ‘Go Seigen vs Fujisawa Kuranosuke’, and owes as much to artists such as Flying Lotus and Dawn of MIDI as it does to composers Maurice Ravel and John Adams.
Next up will be Max Richter’s ‘Vivaldi Recomposed’. One of the most critically and commercially acclaimed contemporary compositions in recent history, this is only the second time the piece will be performed in Queensland, and the first using the original instrumentation.
The piece sees Richter take Vivaldi’s rhythmically compelling and well-loved ‘Four Seasons’, then chop, loop, and refract them into a lush contemporary masterpiece.
The night will also feature Kyla Matsuura-Miller from the Australian National Academy of Music on solo violin, known for her commanding stage presence and visceral musicality, and Southern Cross Soloists’ cellist Patrick Murphy, leading an orchestra.
Closing Dots+Loops Recomposed will be DJ Airport, presenting a conceptual set of electronica and techno.
So dust off your nicest dinner jacket or fancy heels and get down to GOMA for an evening of unique music and amazing performances. Just remember don’t clap between movements…
