EP Review: Jesse Davidson’s ‘Lizard Boy’

Jesse Davidson has released his second EP ‘Lizard Boy’ and will be embarking on a national tour with his band to celebrate its release this week.

Davidson is quickly on the rise just last month, the triple j unearthed finalist released his the dreamy new single Lagoon, which according to Indie Shuffle “continues to show off Davidson’s heavenly vocals and maturing song writing — which is sure to make his status in the Australian music scene rise.”

‘Lizard Boy’  was recorded at Lightship 95, a recording studio on a 550 tonne ship, permanently moored at Trinity Buoy Wharf, East London. The record was produced by London-based, Australian-born Jake Miller who also worked with Davidson on his debut 2013 Ocean’.

The first track, Laika opens with sweeping synths, setting the scene for davidson’s low, velvety voice. The song slowly build with electric guitars and drums jumping in. ‘I’ve know idea, just how I did get here’ echoes throughout the song

The second song, Darling features a prominent bass guitar throughout. A classic lick opens the song and Davidson spends time reminiscing of a lost love and still pining for her ‘how many people in my life, you didn’t want to be my wife.’ The track itself is quite sparse giving room for the layered vocals and letting them take centre stage. Whoever Caroline is she’s probably kicking herself now.

Track three opens with light strumming on an acoustic guitar, which stays in the background through its entirety, building slowly. Morning Light also keeps the musicality sparse giving the lyrical storytelling all the glory. This song is almost the odd one out keeping things simple and acoustic, but it works.

From acoustic straight back into the synth with the lead single, Lagoon. The electric guitar adds a darker flavour to the song as it builds up with Davidson’s echoing vocals lingering over throughout.

The closing track Will You Find Me is the perfect ending. Starting out simple and paired back with soft guitar strums and just Davidson’s voice leading the charge at first, Will You Find Me is a stand out. When you are lulled into this suddenly a thundering of drums kick in, almost reminiscent of Ryan Adams in that moment.

One by one, these songs may seem out of place but together the shape a sonically intriguing EP and the perfect continuation of Davidson’s career. ‘Lizard Boy’ is available now, you can catch him and his band on tour in November and December across Australia.
