Exclusive Premiere: John Drake Unveils New Single Running On Empty Ahead of Debut Album

Brisbane alternative rock songwriter John Drake is giving fans an early taste of his upcoming debut album with the brand-new single Running On Empty (Back To The Man) — premiering exclusively today ahead of its official release tomorrow.

The track is a raw and heartfelt story about breaking free from a loveless relationship, described by Drake as “a sad song with a happy ending.” Its powerful lyricism captures the struggle of being pulled back into cycles of despair before ultimately finding the strength to move on.

“It’s a story about someone trying to escape a loveless relationship, climbing the walls of a well that’s run dry. Every time they feel like they’re just about to get out they get dragged back in. The longer it goes on the less strength they have to get out. Then finally, one day they find the resolve to pick up the strength to carry on and move on. Sad song with a happy ending.”John Drake.

Running On Empty is the second single from Drake’s forthcoming album Separation Songs, recorded with ARIA Award-winning engineer Cody McWaters and longtime collaborator Chass Guthrie. The project follows his July release Siren, which saw attention from big industry tastemakers and impressive radio play.

With its soaring emotional weight and intimate storytelling, Running On Empty continues to cement John Drake as one of Brisbane’s most compelling new voices in alternative rock.

Fans can listen to Running On Empty exclusively on AAA Backstage today before its official release across all streaming platforms tomorrow.
