Greatest Game On Earth Q & A: Jack Parsons from The Pretty Littles
Melbourne hell-raisers The Pretty Littles are soon hitting the road in support of their latest (and gloriously titled) album ‘Soft Rock For The Anxious’. They say it’s “unpretentious, sharply observant, light-hearted, larrikinish, and charming as hell…it’s a little bit slacker and a little bit slick”, we just reckon it’s top notch Aussie rock! We asked the band’s frontman Jack Parsons how the band would approach running an official AFL team and the inspiration behind their killer single Pride.
If you made your own AFL team, who would be your rivals?
Hmm, probably everyone and no one. We’d be Richmond or something. Have a small, devoted fan base that ultimately we let down every year!
Would you encourage the team to play fair or rough?
Mostly fair. Few little knee’s here and there. Nothing reportable.
Are you a ball hog or a team player?
I’m a team player. The other boys are hogs, poor decision-makers too! No left foot either…
What song plays as you run onto the field?
Everytime by Britney Spears if it’s an away game or Everytime by Butterfingers if it’s a home game.
What animal is your mascot?
Probably swine, ‘The Fitzroy North Pigs’.
Who would you want performing at the grand final if you made it?
I’d probably give The Pretty Littles the job – I mean, if I was making that call. Go a bit mad with power and then have an ugly fall from grace and then slowly rebuild in the turn around of the century…
You’ve just come off from a ripper of a quarter, do you choose Gatorade or Powerade?
Hmm, they’re both pretty rank. Probably the orange-coloured Powerade. Its got a pretty non-descript flavour, like Wallaby Gold or something.
For the uninitiated, how do you describe The Pretty Little’s sound and live shows?
Hmm, pretty scrappy middle of the road rock and roll. Earnest scrap.
We’re loving your track Pride, what’s the inspiration behind the song?
Its about the Pride rock in ‘The Lion King’. A mostly happy place, but sometimes your Dad falls out of your hands off a cliff into a stampede ‘cause of your f*ckhead uncle that you always knew wasn’t quite right…
Lastly, what are three things people should know about your new album ‘Soft Rock For The Anxious’?
- Two or three of the songs were mostly written forever ago…like, years I’m talking. Pride and Tall Man have been kicking around in one form or another for a long time – just couldn’t quite get the execution, the album versions are the way they’re meant to be.
- Sleeping In Water turned into about three songs on the album. The first form of that song was probably written in about 2012. It then stemmed into Not Good and Sam’s Mob. That’s fine though ‘cause we need to wait for Snakadaktal to stop being a rad band before we could release it.
- It’s gonna be our first ever record on wax! Go get one from the bandcamp dawgz!
