Green Day Are Finally Back With Flaring Single “Bang Bang”
All-time punk legends Green Day have dropped their first single in four years Bang Bang, and it lives up to its name, ‘cos it bangs hard. The single comes along with the announcement of their twelfth studio album ‘Revolution Radio’, so yes, get excited!
The track is reminiscent of ol’ skool Green Day, with a fast tempo, wild guitar strumming and Billie Joe Armstrong’s commanding vocal style. Bang Bang is a classic punk song, it’s intense and energetic, but with the current tunes being thrown around, it’s actually a refreshing sound. It’s a lot better than the Jessie J and co. track that shares the same name anyway…
Bang Bang orbits around the theme of USA’s numerous mass shootings, as the lyrics dive into the mind of a psychotic shooter. The band has copped some heat from fans, who state that the lyrical content is a little weak. We give them props for portraying a theme that most bands are scared to write about.
Green Day first burst onto the scene with their breakthrough album ‘Dookie’ in 1994, and flared up again with ‘Nimrod’ in 1997. Most readers would be familiar with their hit 2004 album ‘American Idiot’, which featured massive tracks such as American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends.
Comparing to previous releases, Bang Bang fuses the exuberance of ‘Dookie’, the killer melodies found in ‘Nimrod’, and the pop-catchiness of ‘American Idiot’. Green Day are as strong as ever, and over their 11 (and hopefully 12) albums, they’ve managed to find diversity within repetition.
In a video the band posted on Facebook, Armstrong stated “The record is very lush, with cool production and lots of big fat guitar and drums and bass, and also a lot of energy, but not contrived — it’s very real. We feel super-refreshed.”
Green Day’s twelfth studio album ‘Revolution Radio’ is set to be released on Friday, the 7th of October.
