GUEST PLAYLIST: Gold Class – “Travel Tracks To Tantalise The Tastebuds”
Melbourne quartet Gold Class have been kicking plenty of goals lately, from touring America and Europe, slaying festival stages, and most recently releasing a killer brooding music video for their pulsating single Kids On Fire. As the band are currently smashing through a run of international shows, guitarist Evan James Purdey has curated us a playlist of 15 tracks that tickle their tastebuds while they’re on tour.
So jump on our Spotify, FOLLOW us + our Guest Playlist (it’s updated with a new artist’s playlist weekly!), and pretend you’re speeding down the highway in a bomb of a van with some musical mates…
Jane Weaver – Argent
By no means merely a token motorik track to kick off a travelling playlist—Jane Weaver transcends convention at every bend. Her album The Silver Globe is a psych-pop masterpiece and well worth your time.
Antwon – 100k
It takes a grown adult male roughly the duration of The Fifth Element to consume 2 x 1 litre cans of Faxe Extra Strong Beer whilst being driven at speeds of around 130km/h on the autobahn. It’s not exact science, but this a good song for soundtracking that particular experiment.
Friendships w/ Habits – Spit::Flesh::Splinter
There’s an alternate universe somewhere where Friendships’ music is number one worldwide. Although that’s probably the same universe where The Purge is actually a thing. Can’t wait to see them deliver the end-times party fun at Paradise later this year.
Yaws – Yuek
This unholy union between Yaws and Orlando furious raises far more questions than it answers. Not least among them: Squatter the board game as ritualistic totem for identity theft? I am unsettled. Yet it is magnetic.
Art Object – Ride the Metro
You can do a dance to this song called ‘Punching the Vortex Bubble’. If you’re in London, go and see Yaws play and get him to demonstrate it to you.
Country Teasers – Please Ban Music/Gegen Alles
“You only mock the avant garde/because it’s a bit too hard”. Thanks to our tour dad Larry for bringing Country Teasers to our attention. Nothing brings people together like deeply cynical Scottish country punk.
Jessy Lanza – Oh No
This is all colour and momentum and the initial excitement of going to an airport and escaping somewhere. Great pop music with a nicely disorienting video to boot.
Grouper – Heavy Water/I’d Rather Be Sleeping
I love this song. Grouper is what I imagine secular spiritual music would sound like. If that’s a thing. It really captures the whole parallax/staring-pensively-through-windows-at-passing-scenery vibe perfectly.
Dean Blunt – 100
Speaking of scenery, we experienced a very nice moment of synchronous audio/visual with this song and a lush stretch of forest along an east coast US highway. Agreeable.
John Fahey – Wine and Roses
There’s something really haunted about this John Fahey track. This sounds like the feeling of being in the back seat, the headphones are in, and a few too many of the mental ghosts and spiders are closing in. Just spooky enough to chase them away.
Karen Dalton – Katie Cruel
Eventually though, the cultural disconnect and homesickness are going to catch up with you. Everyone has felt like a total stranger at some point. I’ve been revisiting Karen’s music a lot recently. Katie Cruel hits the nail on the head.
Cleaners from Venus – Corridor of Dreams
But don’t worry, Martin Newell and his Cleaners have your back. Cracked pop genius for when the sun’s coming up. Doesn’t matter where you are.
The Carpenters – Superstar
Undeniable.
Rihanna – Work
The album that collectively received the most stereo time on the last tour was Anti. It would be remiss not to include Rihanna here. Aside from this song just being an absolute corker, she sings the word ‘crisis’ better than anyone.
