GUEST PLAYLIST: Johnny Wishbone from The Snowdroppers – “Friday Nights”

snowdroppers-2016-presser

Sydney rockers The Snowdroppers are about to hit the road once again for four quick-fire shows in celebration of their 10th year anniversary! In anticipation for a rowdy series of Friday night shows, frontman Johnny Wishbone has given us his Top 5 Friday night tracks – we’ve also added some of ours to fatten out the killer start-to-the weekend playlist!

Arctic Monkeys – Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?

Imagine if you went back to when the first Arctic Monkeys’ record came out and told people they’d eventually write a G-funk-meets-geezer song and that Miley Cyrus would grow up, become a bong fiend, and do an decent acoustic cover of it?

Lionel Ritchie – Dancing on the Ceiling

I think why this one works so well is that the verses start off sounding like a particularly cheesy Huey Lewis bar band song, but then that really laid back chorus comes in. I get the feeling Lionel Ritchie’s at a really hectic party, jumping all over the place, and then the chorus is him stepping into the yard or the toilet cubicle for a little break, and just going “phew!”.

Roy Orbison – You Got It

This is my current karaoke go to, as the vocal range stays pretty low except for a few Big O moments to razzle dazzle your friends and colleagues. Surely the most classic form of Karaoke is after Friday work drinks with a necktie around your head and wine stained business shirt.

Thin Lizzy – Killer on the Loose

There’s many great Thin Lizzy songs about going out – Jailbreak, Dancing in the Moonlight, (obviously) Boys Are Back In Town, but I thought I’d pick this one – It’s simple and great. Maybe I’ll see if the guys are keen to cover it…

R Kelly – Ignition (Remix)

I guess it’s the songs released when you’re about 18-21 that get indelibly associated in your brain with going out/the weekend…so for better or for worse it’d be between this and Nelly’s Ride With Me for someone of my vintage. We were into wearing flared jeans and dyeing (both!) our hair. I remember thinking at the time “fashion isn’t really going to date from this period”…surrounded by double denim, white pants, whale tails, and bleached noggins…and people are still saying the same thing about the current era!
