Helen Shanahan Releases Haunting Cover of Tim Minchin’s ‘The Aeroplane’

Perth-based folk singer-songwriter Helen Shanahan has today released a stirring cover of Tim Minchin’s song The Aeroplane. Known for her ethereal vocals and emotive performances, Shanahan’s rendition brings new depth to the track, originally written for the second season of Minchin’s award-winning series Upright.

A graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and the 2018 WAM ‘Song of the Year’ award-winner for I Only Hide, Shanahan has become a rising star in the indie folk scene. Over the past few years, she has collaborated with iconic Australian artists like Tim Minchin and Missy Higgins, even providing backing vocals for both in 2021. Her cover of The Aeroplane showcases her haunting vocal style against gentle acoustic guitar, building to an emotional crescendo with soft electric riffs and steady percussion.

The song’s themes of unconditional love and devotion strike a personal chord for Shanahan, who is expecting her second child just weeks after the track’s release.

“The song resonates deeply with me, especially now, with my second baby due just weeks after its release. The lyrics, ‘any fuel or any fire will do / I will fly to you,’ carry a special meaning for me.”

Helen Shanahan’s cover of The Aeroplane is sure to captivate listeners with its emotional resonance and striking beauty.
