Holy Holy Drop Cracker Of A Track, New Album ‘Paint’ Out Early 2017
Aussie alt-rock heroes Holy Holy can’t seem to sit still at the moment! Halfway into their tour for current single Darwinism, the pair have released their latest single Elevator along with announcing their sophomore album will be out in February next year.
While Darwinism features a jagged guitar hook and a powerful brass section, the new single sees Holy Holy drop back to their more signature songwriting style of driving chord progressions and warm melodies. Beginning with a plinking piano, Elevator quickly descends into a steady rock groove with Oscar Dawson’s guitar embellishments beautifully spaced between Timothy Carroll’s introspective lyrics.
The chorus is powerful and extremely catchy, with the lyrics “You were a heart breaker/I could’ve told you that” sung in a way that’s ironically uplifting. A soaring guitar solo and a choral outro are the cherries that top Elevator, which shapes to be one of the strongest songs on their upcoming album that we now can’t wait to get our hands on!
“I can’t recall how it germinated, but before we knew it we were playing the same two chords over and over. It built from there, like a conversation, starting softly, then bouncing around to become louder and louder.
“It had been caught on a phone when we were touring in Europe, and back in Australia we put it together and decided that it is a song,” says guitarist Oscar Dawson.
Carroll and Dawson have been going from strength to strength since the release of their debut album ‘When Storms Would Come’ in July last year. With recent single Darwinism became the most played song on triple j, ‘When The Storms Would Come’ being nominated for ‘Triffid Queensland Album of the Year 2015/16’, Oscar Dawson nominated for ‘Guitarist of the Year’ at The National Live Music Awards, the band making the Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition Longlist, and not to mention Oasis’ Liam Gallagher adding himself to their long list of fans, the Aussie duo have pretty much become impossible to ignore!
Those heading along to the remaining dates on the Darwinism tour will be lucky enough to hear tracks on the upcoming album ‘Paint’ in their final stages on writing.
“It’s great to be out on the road again, especially with a bunch of new tunes to try. We’re in the studio again in December so this a last chance to try some songs out before we get them carved in stone…or vinyl as the case may be,” says frontman Timothy Carroll.
Holy Holy’s sophomore album ‘Paint’ is set for release on Friday the 24th of February. In the meantime check out the new single Elevator and the band’s recent live video of Darwinism filmed at the world renowned ‘Mahogany Sessions’ in the UK below!
