Interview: Hinds Discuss Their Upcoming Splendour In The Grass Debut, Tour With 5SOS + More

We recently had the pleasure of speaking to another of the international acts we’re so excited to see at Splendour– Spanish indie-rock band Hinds.

Madrid-based Carlotta Cosials (vocals, guitar), Ana García Perrote (vocals, guitar), Ade Martin (bass, backing vocals) and Amber Grimbergen (drums) teamed up to form the band back in 2011. As they’ve matured and grown, so has their music- their new album ‘The Prettiest Curse’ is a true testament to this, showcasing their full potential as musicians. A 10-track collection of sparkly pop magic, their music is built upon a foundation of bright melodies- juxtaposing the often heartbreaking themes they’re discussing. A truly magnetic force to be reckoned with, it’s simply impossible to not be drawn in by their all-girl gang glow.

We caught up with Carlotta to hear more about their upcoming trip to our sandy shores, read our chat below!

Hey girls! We’re so excited to see you on the Splendour lineup & love that you’ve got these sideshows too! Is this your first time coming over to play here in Australia?

Oh, no! We’ve been there twice before, but at the very beginning of the band so we really can’t wait to be back!

There’s such an incredible array of artists alongside you on the lineup- who are you most excited to see?

It’s always nice to share the backstage area with the strokes, we even might sing a song together this time! But I am personally beyond excited to watch Wet Leg, I’ve been listening to the album since April non-stop. I love what they’ve done and their ideas.

We know you’ve just been supporting our own Aussies 5 Seconds Of Summer on their European tour- how was that? Was it your first time playing to crowds of that size?

That tour was a dream man. Those huge crowds since the very beginning of the show, losing their shit, giving it all. it was beautiful and gave us so much energy. and also the boys from 5sos were so sweet, we all had the best time (i believe!)

For someone that may not have heard of Hinds before, how would you describe your music?

Powerful- like a slap in your face

From your whole catalogue, what would you say is your favourite song to play live? Do you all agree, or do you have your own fave?

I don’t think we agree on this one… to me (Carlotta speaking) I would say is either ‘Miau’ or ‘Burn’. Very different energies but both are so much fun to take the trip.

Where do you draw inspiration from for your music?

From the goods and the bads that life gives us

We’d love to know who you have been listening to lately, any particular songs or artists that you would recommend?

Wow, this summer I feel like a gramola with only 4 albums inside. So one of them is Wet Leg as I told you before. Then, I have Skinty Fia, the third album of Fontaines Dc. They’re a band we have a special affection for, we met them in their very very beginnings in Dublin and you could already see how special they were. They’re working so hard this year, I wish them the best. Completely changing genres- I also can’t stop listening to Un Verano Sin Ti, the Bad Bunny drop. It is so ridiculous how simple and accurate he describes feelings. And to finish, I’ve been also revisiting The Drums and their Portamento album. So good, hits different when you’re older.
