Interview: Lazy Ghost Chat About Their Latest Single, ‘Eat You Alive’

Cavanbah/Byron Bay-based indie-pop purveyors Lazy Ghost have just returned with their whimsy cut ‘EAT YOU ALIVE‘ – produced and mixed by Jack Nigro (DMAsThe TerrysPacific AvenueMiddle Kids). We caught up with the band to get the low down on the new single and more!

What inspired the creation of ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’, and how does it reflect the surf scene in Byron Bay?

‘EAT YOU ALIVE’ was born out of our experiences soaking up the surf culture in Byron Bay. The song reflects the laid-back yet competitive atmosphere of the surf scene here. It’s a playful jab at all the surfers who reminisce about the “glory days” and how much shit-talking’ there is about how good you are at surfing.

Can you walk us through the songwriting behind ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’ and how it really was sparked?

The songwriting process for ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’ was pretty organic. It all started with a casual conversation at the local cafe, where we overheard some older surfers boasting about their past conquests in the waves. Kyle pieced together Chris’s guitar chords that were played on a half-broken acoustic and sang a melody over the top of it. Pretty soon, the DADADADAS came about, and that sparked the idea of creating a tongue-in-cheek anthem from their perspective, capturing the essence of Byron Bay’s surf culture.

How does ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’ compare to your previous singles in terms of themes and sound?

Compared to our previous singles, ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’ is pretty chill, but I think it stays true to the sound. We had it recorded and mixed by Jack Nigro, and he’s a weapon.

Are there any specific experiences or anecdotes from the Byron Bay surf scene that directly influenced the lyrics or music of ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’?

Absolutely, there are plenty of anecdotes from our time in Byron Bay that influenced the lyrics of ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’. Whether it’s encountering the “old dogs” at the local surf spots or witnessing the exaggerated tales of epic waves, these experiences definitely found their way into the song.

With ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’ being released, what are your expectations or hopes for how listeners will connect with the song?

With ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’, we hope listeners can relate to the humorous take on the surf culture and maybe even chuckle at the familiar scenarios we’ve depicted. Ultimately, we want the song to be a fun ride that connects with anyone who’s ever paddled out into the waves and for everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously.

How do you envision ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’ fitting into your live performances and the overall experience for your audience?

When we perform ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’ live, I think we’ll throw an acoustic guitar in the tour box. It’s pretty simple, so it’ll be a challenge making it sound nice and full how the mix is. Maybe we’ll get a surfer from up here to come chat game on stage while we perform.
