Interview: Meghna

Melbourne-based artist Meghna has just revealed her hypnotic new single ‘Bad Thoughts’ – produced by the artist herself and COBRA, and mixed and mastered by Joey French. We sat down with the young Melbournite to find out more about her new track, writing process and more!

Loving the new track ‘Bad Thoughts’! Can you tell us what this track is about?

Thanks so much! ‘Bad Thoughts’ is about wanting to win at all costs, even if it means that you have to sabotage someone else’s success in the process. It is about being ruthless in the pursuit of your goal and how this can take a toll on your mental health. Beneath the surface, however, it is about the insecurity that comes with comparing yourself to others and measuring your own success against others, instead of focusing on being your own personal best.

You wrote your first song ‘Lost’ at just 13 years old. You have already achieved so much at 19 years old. How did you get into music?

I don’t think I had one point of epiphany, but I always knew it was the only road I wanted to go down. Right from when I was a baby, my Dad used to put on the likes of Dire Straits, Billy Joel and Whitney Houston. I grew up with the stereo and MTV channel constantly on. My Grandfather is also very musical, and we made lots of songs together. He let me play his guitar when I was little and watched as I used to sing nonsense songs while strumming like crazy. In hindsight, he was so patient haha. So, I think my Dad sparked the Rockstar dream and my Grandfather awoke the songwriter in me!

You are currently living in Melbourne in lockdown, how are you dealing with being at home? How are you keeping busy?

I’ve been writing LOTS of music, trying to create heaps of content and cultivate my brand. I’ve been spending heaps of time with my family playing UNO the wrong way, which is always so funny, and doing zoom chats with the mates. I was a bit restless at the start of ISO but I’m used to it now and try not to worry myself with when life will go back to normal. I’m sure it will soon.

What is your favourite genre of music to listen to?

I like all genres! If you see my playlist, you’ll be very confused. I would say some of my favourite genres are trap, hip-hop, R&B and 80’s synthwave.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?

I hope I’ve become the person I want to be, fulfilled my goals, and be completely content and happy. Making and releasing music, playing it in front of as many people as possible. Helping people, spending time with my family and friends, travelling, and having a good ‘ol time.
