Interview: Nicole Quigley Chats About Her Latest Single, ‘Sip Of Summer’

Eora/Sydney-based pop artist Nicole Quigley has just returned with her glistening new single ‘Sip Of Summer’ – produced by Xavier Dunn (Jack River, CXLOE, GRAACE), mixed and mastered by Klaus Hill (PNAU, Masked Wolf). We sat down for a chat with Nicole to find out more about the new jam.

‘Sip of Summer’ is such a bop! What inspired you to write this song?

The song’s context was inspired by a constant feeling I was having towards the end of last year. It was the feeling of knowing something good would end but not wanting it to because you’re falling for someone. I had always wanted to write a song with this title, as it came to me randomly in the supermarket one day. I then thought with the experience I was going through, I wanted to portray this metaphor of knowing good things don’t last and it is as if you are taking your last sip of something. It just also happened that all this was happening in during the summer and honestly the song just fell onto paper perfectly from there.

How did you get into creating and writing music?

The funny thing is I started my creation process through musical theatre and felt really inspired by the story telling aspect of it. As a young kid I would always write songs but never pursued them, it wasn’t until I was around 21 and going through difficult times that I found song writing really therapeutic and decided I could tell my stories through my own lyrics and music.

What is your creative process like? I hear you get inspiration in some funny places! Can you tell us a bit about that?

My creative process always starts with my personal experiences but the time when the best stuff hits is usually when I am out doing random things like grocery shopping or out with friends. There have been times when I rushed to a bathroom cubicle when out with friends so I could sing a tune into my voice notes, because I’m worried I’ll forget it.  The other women in the bathroom must have gotten a surprise.

If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, who would you choose?

I would love to work with Jack Antonoff (Producer & Artist) I am a big fan of Bleachers and also love the work he has produced with major stars like Lorde, Taylor Swift and Lana Del Ray.

Who would you say is your biggest inspiration?

I would say musically Taylor Swift, but I know I have to say my mum. It’s always been my mum.
