Interview: Peni Parker Chats About Her Latest Single, ‘Disrupt’

Eora/Sydney-based alt-rock artist PENI PARKER has just revealed her soul-stirring new single ‘Disrupt‘ – produced and mixed by Fletcher Mathews (Trophy EyesThe BuoysDear Seattle). We had a chat with Peni to find out more about the new single.

Congratulations on the release of ‘Disrupt’! How does it feel to have the track out?

Thank you, honestly, it’s so odd! I’m so used to having all my angry songs drop but it feels a bit different when you’re being vulnerable on a track.

It’s been great to see you engaging with your audience before the release through social media it! How was the reception to the single in the lead up to it?

Everyone’s been great, I love creating engaging visual content. Lots of fans have loved it, some have said it gave them the ick because of the wound in my promos was so real looking!

I’ve also been a bit sneaky and started playing some of the EP early when opening for Ocean Grove this month. It was nice to get that feedback and see the song start to come to life online and in person.

What is ‘Disrupt’ about?

It’s a bit a reminder of my self-worth. I use that repetitive pre-chorus as a little mantra to push through and keep being a good human, even when you feel like your world is crumbling. It may sound dramatic, but 2022 did me so dirty that I needed that reminder.

I love the cover art of the single! What is the importance of visuals to you when releasing music?

Thank you! To me, the visuals are just as important as my songs. I just love creating and they go hand in hand to tell each story. I’ve put so much work into the concepts and comic that coincide with the EP, really wanting to create a world to dive into.

Talk us through the process when creating the cover art, visuals and comics for your music?

Goodness, it’s a lot. A short summary, I came up with all my ideas, characters, colour pallets, backstories, and future arcs for the comic in 2021 and then tried to figure out the best way to stagger it going forward with releases.

I draw everything up myself and then send it to a WAY more talented human like slugsart who did the EP/comic cover art. I spend a lot of time finding the right creatives to work with, and she absolutely smashed it first go.

What can we expect to see next from PENI PARKER?

More songs from my debut EP, more comics and of course me stomping around the stage at more shows!
