Interview: Sophian Talk Up Their Latest Offering, ‘Georgia’

Boorloo/Perth-based indie-rock band Sophian have just released their shimmering new single Georgia – produced by Dave Parkin at Blackbird Studios (Spacey JaneSly WithersOldMervs). We had a chat with the band to get to know the track a little better.

‘Georgia’ is finally out! How does it feel having the track out in the world?

We are so stoked! We put so much love, effort, and thought into this track and are so eager to hear what our current and prospective new listeners think. It’s a bit different to our past songs that we have released but still has that ‘Sophian’ essence in it.

What is the story behind your latest song?

From a musical perspective we really wanted to focus on a song where the listeners and fans at a show could really connect and be a part of the song. Our aim is to have everyone in the crowd sing the song along with us. For those just listening to the song at home or blasting it in your car – you guys are going to want to sing along too!

From a lyrical perspective, the song was written about a sailor falling in love with a mermaid. It’s meant to be a bit of a metaphor as to how in real life and relationships as well, you might find yourself in a relationship where it feels like it could be impossible because of the differences you have but at the end of the day, love and hard work will still conquer.

You’ve shared the stage with some incredible artists in WA. What is your most notable live experience as a band to date?

Indeed, we have and it’s hard to pick just one, but if we had to, it would have been the show where we supported local legends Coterie. They are an amazing band and good friends of ours. It was one of our very first shows as well, we had only been a band for just over 2 months, and we played to a sold-out crowd of over 250 people and the feeling was pretty damn euphoric.

What can fans expect to see from a Sophian live show?

Be prepared to go on a musical journey with us. You are going to be dancing, having moments where you might fight back a tear and most of all be prepared to not be able to help yourself and sing our songs along with us!

As a band, what would be some things on the bucket list for you?

Let us write down some of our bucket list items:

  • Tour around Australia and New Zealand
  • Tour around the world
  • Play Falls festival, Splendour In The Grass and Glastonbury Festival
  • Sell out and play our headline show at Redhill Auditorium in WA
  • Release a debut album
  • Play a support show with Coldplay

What comes next for Sophian?

We will be back in the studio working on new music for you and have it out sooner than you know it. We will also be looking at touring around Australia in the near future and supporting some big-name artists!
