Interview: Tim Derricourt from Dappled Cities

dappledcities-1
Sydney quintet Dappled Cities have been on a break since their 2014 B-sides and rarities release ‘Many Roads’, but now they’re back with a new single from their fifth studio album, yet to be named. The talented lads recently released That Sound to give us a taste of the forthcoming album’s “mellow, harmony driven sounds”. We had a chat to frontman Tim Derricourt about the new single, touring, and their sneaky plan for an additional Brisbane show…

First of all, congratulations on the new single That Sound, it’s a great teaser for the album! What else can we expect to hear?

The album in some ways is quiet different to that song, we released that song because it was the most wild and the most 70’s of all the tracks. Everything else is a bit more mellow, more harmony driven and a testament to our surroundings, especially when we went to Byron Bay.

We heard that the Byron Bay vibe got the creative juices flowing! What was it about Byron that made your creative process flow so well?

We just spent so many years saying we have to go to New York and London and make records in big cities, and then we kind of got to the stage where we were thinking, if you only get to make a record every 2/3 years you may as well make it in beautiful surroundings and have a lovely time.

That’s very well said, Byron’s a beautiful place! Speaking of places you’ve been, you guys have toured all over the place, what’s been your favourite city so far?

To be in or to play in?

Both!

Well, I’d say my favourite city to be in is Mexico City! I would like to live there at some point, it’s just the best! Unfortunately we haven’t made our way to play there yet. But my favourite place to play…we always have an amazing time in New York. It’s fun and we’ve got good fans and good friends there and good venues and we’ve always just had a good time.

When you were recording through Los Angeles and San Francisco you were working with Jared Kritzstein, did he work with you guys on the new album?

No, for this album we worked with Luke Burtoz who is a very old friend of ours. After years of going to America and meeting people and trusting them with our future after only meeting them for an hour, we decided to work with the guy we’ve know for a long time and take a little bit more control of what we wanted to do. Not that working with Jared wasn’t great! But its nice to just share your vibe and not be too stressed about trying to impress people or doing things your not that comfortable with.

Did you ever think you’d be so well received after releasing your first single back in 2002?

I thought we’d be much better received! I thought I’d be the king of Spain by now! (laughs) No, its not every band that gets to make five albums and we’re going make another one after this. We’re just one of those fortunate bands that has no creative differences and we all get along really well and we like being in the studio together. We constantly write songs so its just one those things that’s like it will never stop.

You guys have just announced two shows, one in Sydney and Melbourne. For Brisbane fans, will you be announcing a show here?

Yeah, we certainly are! I’m pretty sure I’m allowed to announce that we’re playing the Spiegeltent at the Brisbane Festival in September! Its going to be amazing it’s a beautiful, old, reconstructed tent that holds about 500 people and has a beautiful vibe.
