It’s Weird What Furniture Does When You’re Not Looking, Just Ask Ha The Unclear
Do you ever wonder what your furniture does when you’re not looking? Well Kiwi alt-poppers Ha The Unclear do, and they have just dropped the second video from their debut album ‘Bacterium, Look at You Go’. Secret Lives of Furniture is a quirky, indie-folk song written from the point of view of a coffee table. The odd perspective however has merit, according to singer Michael Cathro.
“I was watching my coffee table one day and started wondering about what kind of life it’d had and what it would tell me about if it could. I have no idea where the table came from so (I) imagined this entire life for it,” Cathro said.
Whilst this premise may have some of you looking at your furniture in a different light, the song is uniquely catchy. The raspy half-spoken, half-sung style of Cathro’s vocals make for an edgy, aggressive verse, whilst the chorus is infatuated by a blissful melodic shift. Furthermore, dark lyrics put an interesting twist on the song, creating a resentful narrative that becomes more haunting after every listen.
The New Zealand 4-piece will bring their cathartic blend of jangly indie-folk, hook-driven pop to Australia shores later this week for shows in Melbourne, Ballarat and Adelaide.
The idiosyncratic sound and shocking lyrics have made waves in New Zealand and it’s time for us Aussies to adopt the infectious sound of Ha The Unclear.
