King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Embrace Orchestral Psych-Rock on New Album ‘Phantom Island’
Prolific genre-blending rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return with their latest studio album, Phantom Island — a symphonic, introspective voyage through cosmic psychedelia and emotional depth. Marking their second release on their own p(doom) records label, Phantom Island sees the Melbourne collective expand their sonic universe once again, this time blending swirling riffs with lush strings, horns, and woodwind.
While previous album Flight b741 leaned into wild storytelling and high-octane adventure, Phantom Island shifts its focus inward. Described by frontman Stu Mackenzie as a more “introverted” record, the album explores the emotional weight of long journeys, homesickness, and existential questions — all wrapped in the band’s signature experimental style. It’s a mature and reflective step for a group known for their mind-bending versatility.

The release of Phantom Island comes ahead of King Gizzard’s highly anticipated Australian tour this December, which will include both traditional rock shows and special orchestra performances. The latter will feature a 29-piece orchestra, conducted by Chad Kelly, including two landmark nights at the Sydney Opera House.
Phantom Island sees King Gizz continue to defy genre and expectation, proving once again that evolution is their only constant.
