Drawing on her background in philosophical theology and her fascination with Danish folklore, Hildegard delivers a song that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant. Themes of longing, surrender, and quiet hope are interwoven with an emotional honesty that gives the single a rare timelessness.
“I wrote Still the Waves the same week my sister-in-law gave birth to her son, Storm. The name reminded me of a prayer by Kierkegaard: ‘O Lord, calm the waves of this heart…Calm its storms.’ I adapted this line for the chorus, drawing inspiration from the meditative style of Taizé music I used to sing in church choirs. Taizé melodies are intentionally repetitive, creating space for contemplation and deeper emotional resonance. The sea also holds deep personal meaning for me. My father passed away in a diving accident when I was a child and the lingering grief surfaces in the line: ‘Sitting at the bottom of the sea, sorrowing.’ I borrowed this image from Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling, where he describes the Merman. The song holds both of these energies: beginnings and endings, hope and pain.” – Kirsten Hildegard.
The production, crafted in collaboration with Argentina‑based producer Nick Honchar, is minimal yet rich in texture—each note carefully placed to enhance Hildegard’s voice. The result is a dreamlike ballad that captures the beauty of stillness while brimming with emotional undercurrents.
Still The Waves is more than a debut—it’s a statement of intent. With her ability to combine delicate soundscapes, thoughtful storytelling, and raw vulnerability, Kirsten Hildegard positions herself as an artist to watch in the indie folk and dream pop scenes.
