Lazy Ghost Share Sun-Drenched EP, ‘Sarah-Tonin’

Cavanbah/Byron Bay-based surf-rock favourites Lazy Ghost have just dropped a new EP, hilariously titled ‘SARAH-TONIN’. The band have been super busy touring both Australia and New Zealand and successfully launched the EP over the weekend on a boat on the Brisbane River!!

‘SARAH-TONIN’ kicks off with the swaggering, Western-influenced track ‘ONLY MAN IN TOWN’. There is a gravelliness to lead singer Kyle Lemming’s vocals that are both equal parts charming and menacing. It is also a chance to show off the band’s guitar work, with reverb, delay-laced chords, and howling solos.

This leads into the delightful ‘PARK HOTEL’, packed to the brim with hook-laden melodies and a carefree, almost whimsical atmosphere. The track’s endearing nature is sure to go down a treat live, with massive singalong potential. The EP’s third track and midpoint, ‘WEEKEND’, bursts out of the blocks with toe-tapping rhythms and showcases the band’s versatility as they effortlessly duck and weave through different sections.

The next track and lead single, ‘EAT YOU ALIVE’, is a beautiful beachfront ballad that wraps itself around the listener like a warm beach towel. It has an effervescent quality that feels tailor-made for Australian road trips with mates.

‘SARAH-TONIN’ closes with the reflective, heartfelt number ‘OLD FRIEND OF MINE’, calling back to the EP’s title with the lyrics – “Sarah, I want you, I need you”. The band explain this inspiration, “‘SARAH-TONIN’, pronounced – serotonin – is a reminder to savour the rider beers and not to fret and stress about the venue forgetting to pay the band. The chase of success is often at the cost of ‘Sarah’, our friend and favourite neurotransmitter. ‘Sarah’ transports you to good times whenever she’s feelin’ agreeable but also stitches you up, leaving you high and dry as soon as you chase her.”

Overall, ‘SARAH-TONIN’ is an incredible combination of hooky, sun-soaked, surf-rock tunes that are sure to get stuck in your head. I am very much looking forward to hearing them live sometime in the near future!
