LEØ’s Mystical New Single Has “Us” Astonished
Brisbane-based trio LEØ have released the first taste of their upcoming debut EP ‘Young’, set for release in early 2017. Their new track Us holds the promise of a different vibe for the group, with a new-found exploration of electronic sound that is an unexpected, but nonetheless appreciated move for LEØ.
Us is driven by the throbbing drum and synthesiser loops, with an eerie echo that creates a mystical jungle vibe, maintaining a sultry kind of heat throughout the song. Chloe Pilkington’s vocals hover above this, effortlessly finding the balance between the ethereal and the childish. Pilkington perfectly delivers her emotionally-charged lyrics like “No longer your slave/ No longer thinking about us” to capture the sense of bitterness and wistfulness inherent in a break-up.
Us manages to capture a true sense of melancholy without feel ham-fisted or overly dramatic. The simplicity of the underlying synth allows for layers of instrumentation to be built up into a swelling soundscape without being overwhelming. LEØ have shown a maturity in their song-writing on this track. We can’t wait to hear more of it when their EP ‘Young’ is released in January 2017.
