Live Review: Frnkiero andthe Patience w/ Walter Schreifels @ The Triffid
Many people know Frank Iero as the guitarist for mid-00s emo kings My Chemical Romance. Since the band’s hiatus in 2013, Iero has been busy working on new material released with his bands Frnkiero andthe Patience, and Frnkiero andthe Cellarbration. With a resume stacked like that, we knew were were in for a spectacular show when he arrived to rock the Triffid!
Walking into the old aircraft hanger, opening act Walter Schreifels started his set of catchy little tunes solo on his electric guitar. He warmed the crowd up with his casual vibe, seeming very honest and genuine. His jovial nature spread through the audience, and he even made up a song on the fly about the set he was playing.
Schreifels finished his set and the crowd of young people was awash with black and red outfits, punctuated every so often with My Chemical Romance and frnkiero shirts. After a bit of a wait, Iero and his band came onstage and the crowd erupted!
Jumping straight into it, the band launched into their opening song tragician. From the get go it was clear this was going to be a super energetic show, and the band weren’t holding back. They played through a selection of songs including weighted and she’s the prettiest girl at the party, and she can prove it with a solid right hook (which received a huge cheer). The band managed to do something few acts can, with their songs sounding better live than on the recordings (which probably had a lot to do with Iero’s sheer energy and passion).
It was clear Iero was doing his best to make the audience feel comfortable, accepting gifts from crowd members in-between songs during the set. It was also obvious that coming to Australia and playing his songs meant a lot to the guitarist-turned-frontman, as he exclaimed “this is a trip I’ve been planning for a long time!”
In keeping with the personal feeling of the set, the band launched into a rendition of Best Friends Forever (But Not Now), a song he wrote with his daughter Lily, which the crowd loved, and sung along with the refrain: “best friends forever, best friends forever, best friends forever, but not now”.
The band treated the crowd to a slew of varied songs, including anthemic Remedy, as well as the slower stage 4 fear of trying, which had the crowd swaying along, captivated by the band before them.
The band closed with the ever-energetic single joyriding and from the first note of the song the audience were gearing up for the release of the chorus. The chorus hit, and all of The Triffid transformed into this single-agenda being; jumping, dancing, and bopping along as the frontman screamed the words out to them.
The 4-piece left the stage, and immediately the crowd screamed for more. They returned to a roar of cheering from the audience, laughing that they didn’t know many more songs, before closing with a cover of the Ramones classic song Rockaway Beach, accompanied on stage by Walter Schreifels which fitted the energy and attitude of the night perfectly!
All in all it was a very enjoyable, energy-filled show, and a good demonstration of Iero creating his own unique show, which fans seemed to really enjoy.
