Live Review: Stick To Your Guns w/ Being As An Ocean, Hindsight & Uni/Vs @ The Triffid – 17.01.2018

All the way from Orange County, California, Stick To Your Guns embarked on an Australian tour at Unify Gathering to share with with Australian fans their latest album ‘True View’. Fourth show for the tour was at The Triffid, Brisbane—a performance no one will ever forget.

Opening up for the night was Brisbane locals, Uni/Vs. With a melodic hardcore sound they were the perfect support for the ‘True View’ Tour and overall start to the evening. Having formed only recently in 2016, the band seems to have a very promising future by already having such a strong supporting fan base within the crowd. With a hardcore sound and an abrasive influence, the energy was high on the stage so they continuously had the crowd engaged throughout the whole set. It’s clear Uni/Vs are passionate about what they do, so I have no doubt we will be seeing a lot more of them.

Second support for the evening was Hindsight—a five-piece melodic hardcore band from Adelaide, South Australia. From previously seeing Hindsight perform at Crowbar in Fortitude Valley last September, it was great to have them back in Brisbane. With sounds that instantly create a touching atmosphere, Hindsight always effectively draw an emotional connection from the crowd. Whenever Hindsight perform it is guaranteed you are going to feel something every time. The lead vocalist, Jack Nelligan, screamed lyrics with such emotion in his voice, and physically gave it his all by jumping barricades to be with the audience. He continuously poured his heart and soul into every word and melody Hindsight have created. Finishing on a fan favourite, Loveover, it was the perfect ending to the impassioned performance.

Third performance was Being As An Ocean—a post-hardcore quartet from Alpine, California. Throughout the whole performance Being As An Ocean maintained such a personal interconnection to the crowd. Especially the lead vocalist, Joel Quartuccio, who interacts with the crowd by walking down from the stage and being amongst the audience while performing. It created such a personal performance the emotions were high, as I looked around the room I saw tears, not of sadness but for the emotion he brings with every word he sings. Being As An Ocean truly create a surreal atmosphere and an overall humbling performance.

Touring in support of their latest album ‘True View’, Stick To Your Guns performed a set no one will ever forget. The performance had the whole crowd moving and bopping in time, while screaming the lyrics we all desired to hear. Featuring songs such as Against Them All and We Still Believe, fans sang along to every word, while Stick To Your Guns flawlessly performed every sound. The lead vocalist, Jesse Barnett, in between songs spoke words of encouragement and inspiration to the crowd. He brought more to the stage than just music and sound, but stories of loss and hope, and how in this life we must treat each other with respect, and have hope for the future for things do get better. He pours his heart out so we can feel something for those few moments, and learn from the words he speaks. To perform emotive melodic choruses, to a smooth breakdown, it assists in the process of letting go of any anger and sadness any of us may carry, Stick To Your Gun truly gave strength to everyone in the room.

Overall the ‘True View’ Tour was certainly an emotional roller coaster with an outstanding lineup of musicians. With each individual band having their own unique connection to the crowd, I truly was mesmerised and incredibly moved by the music and what it created.
