Mallrat Casts a Spell with New Single ‘Hocus Pocus’

Brisbane indie-pop sensation Mallrat has returned with her second release of the year, Hocus Pocus, a mesmerising track that blends electronic beats with her signature ethereal vocals. This new single, produced by Styalz Fuego (Troye Sivan, Tate McRae) and Kito (Skrillex, FLETCHER), explores human connection through an enchanting mix of spacey rhythms and atmospheric soundscapes.

Hocus Pocus weaves together the experimental edge Mallrat is known for, sampling DJ Zirk’s Born2 Lose and layering it with broken beats and deep bass. The result is a dreamy exploration of relationships, alternating between moments of warmth and vulnerability to sharp, fleeting intensity.

“I fell over and fractured my arm dancing to this demo on a walk home. I couldn’t help but be excited! I had to wear a cast and sling. When I was writing the pre-chorus section of this song I was thinking of the sharp inhale breaths as lyrics that needed their own moment, kind of like a punchline. A lot of the time in pop music, breaths are edited out and turned down, but they felt important here to me.” – Mallrat.

Accompanying the single is a cosmic, visually captivating music video directed by Tom Carroll, adding another dimension to the release. With Hocus Pocus, Mallrat continues the themes of introspection and connection introduced in her earlier track, Ray of Light, earning praise from key outlets and tastemakers the world over. This hypnotic new release reaffirms Mallrat’s position as a unique and innovative force in the indie pop scene.
