Marcus Wynwood Shares Inspirations Behind Recent Single, ‘Never Left The Ground’
Tasmanian genre-hopping artist Marcus Wynwood has unveiled his latest single ‘Never Left The Ground’; released last week along with the announcement of his upcoming EP ‘Never Stood Out and Never Fit In’, set for release on the 17th of October.
Defying his punk rock roots and leaning into new territory, ‘Never Left The Ground’ draws on folk influences to create a heartfelt indie-ballad. Recorded and mixed by Marcus with mastering from Grammy Award-winning engineer William Bowden (Gotye, Living End, Kylie Minogue), the track also features Andrew Sulzbergerof the Bad Dad Orchestra on trumpet duties, adding a soaring layer of melody towards the backend of the track.
To celebrate the release, Marcus has given us a list of his favourite indie-folk tracks, that have inspired his the sound found on his latest single.
- In the Aeroplane Over the Sea – Neutral Milk Hotel
This is the archetypal 90s indie pop song. The songwriting is amazing. Strumming flowing guitars and it even has a trumpet solo. The vibe of this song was a big influence in NLTG. - For No-one – The Beatles
Another song with an incredible horn solo which heavily inspired NLTG. - Harpoon – Jebadiah
I love how there is so much emotion in the performance of this song. Expression is really important in conveying the meaning, and with this track you are really drawn into the emotion. - Thinking About You – Radiohead
Another great 90s track with strumming flowing guitars, a simple melody and a story to tell. Absolutely love it. - Do One – Frank Turner
Although I have only recently dived into Frank Turner’s work, over the years people have been making comparisons with my music. This track is an acoustic version of his song. I love how direct the lyrics are. Frank, if you even need an Australian support hit me up! - Feeling Oblivion – Turin Brakes
Another amazing indie folk track from the early 2000s. Again, stummy guitars and clever lyrics makes this one of my favourite tracks. The production is amazing – a great reference track when mixing. - Do You Realize?? – The Flaming Lips
Indie pop royalty, just a loveable singalong tune. - Cherub – Ball Park Music
This band has to be my favourite Australian band at the moment, I’ve seen them a heap of time live and they just blow me away. This track is so gentle and quiet and has so much emotion. - Life Less Ordinary – The Bronx
This track represents the softer side of these punk rockers. They have been a big influence on me over the years playing loud heavy tunes. This song still has that punk edge, but toned down into a beautiful ballad like arrangement. - Everything is Great – Alice Skye
I listened to the song a lot when writing my Killerbites EP, and I think some of the style and vibe has rubbed off on NLTG. It’s a great track with a really well thought out arrangement. Everything is in the right spot to make the song flow just right.
