Melbourne Darling FERLA is Australia’s Answer to Mac DeMarco

We here in the Sunshine State are only jealous of three things from Melbourne: the 1956 Olympic Games, trams, and FERLA.

FERLA is Guiliano Ferla, formerly of Twin Beasts, a renowned loiterer of the Melbourne underground scene. FERLA’s music can best be described as winking new-wave meets jangle-pop, illustrated no more than on his latest single I Can’t Let You Down.

I Can’t Let You Down is FERLA’s first release since his 2015 debut EP ‘Guilt Pop’, which was featured on a whole host of music blogs, and received airtime on a variety of community radio stations. FERLA has a second EP in the works, his first release via new label Our Golden Friend.

We are intrigued by FERLA in a way that few artists truly manage. His aesthetic is a heady mix of Ali G meets DMA’s. His music, for example 2015’s In the Night, has an incredible earnestness which stands in stark contrast to his urban prankster visage.

This separation of art and artist is most notably achieved by contemporary Mac DeMarco, whose underground icon status is founded on throwing 60s revivalism at teenies irreverence and seeing what happens. FERLA is well placed to do something similar with 80s new-wave, and that excites the hell out of us!

Luckily, we’ll be able to sate our curiosity soon: FERLA is playing a headline show in support of I Can’t Let You Down, support shows for Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Shepparton Airplane, as well an eagerly anticipated journey north for BIGSOUND 2016.
