Mumford & Sons Releasing African-Inspired EP

mumford & sons

English folk heroes Mumford & Sons are set to release a new EP ‘Johannesburg’ made with their touring pals Baaba Maal, Beatenberg, and The Very Best. Set for release in June, the collaborative tracks were recorded in South Africa over two all-day and all-night sessions. The lead single There Will Be Time has shot straight to #1 in South Africa since it’s release in January.

The 4-piece headed over to South Africa earlier this year on a sell-out tour with Beatenberg and The Very Best before meeting up with local popstar Baaba Maal. “The whole thing came together because of [our producer]…and they had [actually] acted like sonic trailblazers in a lot of ways, marrying afrobeat rhythms, Esau and Baaba’s voices and languages, over Western songwriting,” said Marcus Mumford.

The lead single There Will Be Time features Mumford’s signature sound with banjo-led folk crescendos and plenty of stomping percussion. Baaba Maal puts a cultural touch on the song with strong African vocals along with tribal drums. The marrying of the different instrumentations and vocal delivery makes the song really interesting.

The full EP will be released in mid June, in the meantime check out There Will Be Time (live) below!
