PREMIERE: Faux Bandit Drop Raw Take On Modern Masculinity in “Flex”
Rock duos are just about all the rage at the moment. Think of The Black Keys taking on the world with Lonely Boy and Gold on the Ceiling or DZ Deathrays thrashing out Cops/Capacity or Dollar Chills at just about every Australian festival these days. With that attitude in mind Brisbane duo Faux Bandit are back, and they’re taking a look at what it means to be a man in the modern world in their latest single Flex.
The track cranks it right up straight out of the gates with distorted guitar riffing and muted strumming interchanging between bars, all to the backdrop of hard and fast drumming. The rawness and ferocity continue and build through the entirety of the 2:47 track. It all culminates in a thrashing, splashing barrage of rock in the latter half of the song, nudging 11 on the volume dial.
The vocal lines from frontman Adam Brill are delivered in a stunted and frustrated style, spat in time with the guitar strumming. Lyrics like “Don’t come over let me send a little picture instead” and “Forget me and remember me as a flex in a text” summarise the band’s view of masculinity in the modern age of social media.
The track is the first taste of the band’s as-yet unnamed upcoming third EP, which is boasting to be bigger, bolder, and will “explore the darker sides of life and love”.
Faux Bandit burst onto the Brisbane scene when they released their 2013 debut EP ‘Diamond Man’. They followed that up with 2015’s ‘The Better You Look, The More You See’ EP, and a number of live shows all across Brisbane venues. With the new single comes a fresh live show, as the band are launching the track at Brisbane’s Woolly Mammoth with special guests Soupy LaRue.
