Premiere: Garage Noise Unveil New EP ‘Daisybrain’ – Listen First Here
Sydney’s rising indie rock outfit Garage Noise are back with their brand-new EP Daisybrain, and we’re thrilled to bring you the first exclusive listen before its official release tomorrow. Blending elements of pop-punk, Midwest emo, and indie rock, the band’s latest body of work is packed with punchy guitars, soaring melodies, and emotionally charged lyricism that solidifies their place as one of Australia’s most exciting emerging acts.
Daisybrain follows the success of Garage Noise’s 2023 debut EP Innocent Scenes, recorded at the renowned Grove Studios with producer Connor Massey (Deadshowws). Since then, the band has gone from strength to strength, sharing the stage with Down And Out, Future Static, Ruffians, and more.
Earlier this year, Garage Noise dropped their infectious single ‘Eden’, giving fans a taste of what was to come. Now, with Daisybrain officially here, the band is ready to take their high-energy live show on the road, kicking off their Daisybrain Tour tonight at Burdekin Hotel in Sydney.
To get to know the EP Garage Noise have shared with us a track by track walkthrough.
Silver Lining
Silver Lining was written with lots of energy in mind, and we took a lot of influence from Blink-182 for that. It is a song about reminiscing and looking back on the emotions felt for someone, even though it has become clear that those feelings are no longer reciprocated. The chorus melody came from Sam, Zac and I coming together to write the song and jokingly singing my old home address, but it stuck! The song felt like a catalyst for writing new material and we couldn’t have picked a better song to start this EP with, it gives our listeners a bit of ‘Innocent Scenes’ (our previous EP), but begins to expand that into a newer and more refined sound.
Eden
When we heard the demo of this for the first time, we instantly knew it had to be the lead single. Eden is a track about regretting the loss of a relationship and thinking about both the good times and the bad times. It discusses the joy of the “honey-moon” stage and then into the deterioration and eventual breakup. This track was written on a writing trip to the Blue Mountains where we were able to wholly focus on writing new songs, and developing our sound. This song feels very ‘garage noisey’ in retrospect, like a summary of everything on ‘Innocent Scenes’.
Cherry Red
Cherry Red is one of those songs that is both just fun to play, and fun to listen to, and was fun to record. The lyrical content of the song is quite a juxtaposition to the actual music, with the lyrics full of longing and regret, but the instrumentals quite upbeat and joyful. Originally we had another song that Flynn started which we noodled around with on the writing trip but we all felt we wanted something more energetic and fun. The big “la da da” section in the middle was so much fun to record, [Connor] Massey (our producer) got us to record the vocals together facing the wall, on our hands and knees, and like we were tradies or footy players. Zac’s guitar solo rips on this song! He got a message on his phone about two weeks before the studio and then had the solo ready in about an hour afterwards.
Become
This was technically the first Daisybrain song. Zac wrote the lyrics in a state of mind where he was very much over the constant conversations around cost of living, inflation and just the general politics of the world in 2023/24. It’s definitely a bit of a reminder to live in the moment and the message in this song is to remember that there is always a bigger picture that is worth seeing despite how hard that is to believe, but also that those sad feelings are ok to feel and should be acknowledged. The song takes you on a huge journey and the lyrics in this song are a real standout to anything we’ve done before.
Dawn Song
This song was a lot of fun to make; we had wanted to do something more folk-y and we got our answer in ‘Dawn Song’. Flynn got the initial riff from playing around on a guitar at uni just before we went on the writing trip and it was one of those things where everyone added theirpart and it complemented the whole thing. What I love so much about this song is how different it is for us, but how well it fits into Daisybrain. Flynn actually joins Zac on acoustic guitar here and it’s so interesting how both of their parts are the real meat of the song and don’t have much impact on their own. We penned the title after Zac explained to Flynn on our writing trip that the house we were staying in would be amazing for the ‘Dawn Song’ of the birds as we backed onto the national park. Flynn is very proud of the harmony in this song; for any music nerds reading there are two different cadences and a secondary dominant to transition into the end of the song.
Colourblind
Colourblind is a track about new love, and the feeling of excitement, and overwhelming joy at this new relationship. The track touches on being more vulnerable with this person because you are so in love with them. Zac went off on his own for about 45 minutes and came back with a finished song, and we were all so impressed. Sam Fender’s song ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ was a heavy inspiration for this track, as we were trying to snap out of writing in verse-chorus form. This is vastly different to what we’ve ever written before and really raised the bar in terms of quality of the songwriting we were producing.
Tides
Tides is a very delicate song, and feels like everything about our lead singer Sam has been encapsulated into 4 minutes and 13 seconds. It is written as a reflection on a fight with a loved one, and trying to make up for your mistake afterwards by reminding them how much you love them and how important they are in your life. It is one of our most emotionally driven and hard-hitting songs to date, and packs a punch every time we hear it and play it; Zac said that he actually couldn’t hold back his emotions when listening to the desk roughs after we wrapped up recording. It was interesting for us to have this “slower” song as the closer for the EP, but it actually works really well as it sort of leaves you at a loss for words and you just sort of sit there thinking about everything you have just heard and the emotions that the song draws out of you.
